Why Andrea Sachs Needs a Union

Click on the link here to find out why Andrea Sachs needs a union.

This was suggested by Paul Wallich and is a piece by Ezra Klein in The American Prospect about the character, in the movie The Devil Wears Prada, played by Anne Hathaway. Klein's basic point is that the character, Andrea Sachs, would not have been treated so abusively had she been a member of a union.

What I found particularly interesting in Klein's piece was his recognition that working long hours for inadequate pay is as problematic for people engaged in progressive causes as it is for people shoveling fluff into the brains of gullible consumers. The idea that doing good work necessarily entails misery is, I think, ultimately as pernicious as the idea that it's OK to sacrifice everything else in your life to claw your way into the vicinity of some mythical peak.
